Chapter Nine

Forty Years Later…

It was a warm summer’s day in Nevada. The sun was a quarter way up in the sky as she arrived at the Jacobson estate by invitation. Thanks to her being his doctor, Carl still looked middle aged in his seventies, and was in fact middle aged. The Terrans in the empire lived ten times longer because of DNA manipulation to extend life and slow aging, Carl would live about twice as long than normal simply out of being kept in peak physical health down to the molecular level.

He smiled wide, “Hi, Cassie. Come on in.”

Cassie returned the smile, “What’s the occasion? Your invitation is all mysterious.”

Carl chuckled, “That was Maria’s idea, and perhaps the human propensity to want to show off. This day has been a long time in coming, ever since you knocked on my door for the first time over fifty years ago. It’s good to see you.”

Cassie followed Carl through the mansion and out the back door. There was a large shuttle sitting on a helicopter pad in the back. Two women stood there chatting as they waited, the second in a military spaceship’s uniform. The tight full bodied pressure suit covered by a crisp jacket and pants.

The first was Maria, the second her forty-year-old daughter. Sabrina took after her mother in the hair and eyes, both a lovely dark brown, but she was a few inches taller.

Sabrina smiled, “Aunt Cassie, it’s been too long.”

Maria nodded in agreement with a welcoming smile on her face.

Cassie noted the markings on her collar, “Congratulations on making Captain.”

Sabrina sighed, “Thanks. I miss flying the ships, but someone has to run them. Did dad say anything?”

Cassie laughed, “No, so what’s going on?”

Sabrina replied, “I’m going to give you a tour of my new ship.”

Maria nodded, “We also have a surprise, and an… offer, on behalf of the admiralty board and world leaders. Cade and Jessica wanted to do it, but we won the coin toss.”

She was still extremely close to Susan and Dennis, and all their children, but the world never had figured out those two had been on the original mission. She’d been cautious to hide the connection, though she supposed it was probably moot at this point. Neither Dennis or Susan were ones to seek attention however, and they were quite happy living in obscurity. Very few people were aware that Carl wouldn’t have been nearly as effective in building Earth’s technological abilities without them.

Cassie snickered, “I’m surprised they didn’t just call me.”

Carl shook his head, “They know how close you are to both our families, and they’re shameless enough to use that leverage.”

Cassie giggled, “Alright.”

Sabrina winked, “First the tour.”

Sabrina turned and got on the shuttle, and the rest of them followed her on. The shuttle was large enough to accommodate ten passengers besides the two pilot seats in the forward cockpit.

Sabrina went to sit in the pilot’s chair, but her mother beat her to it with a sneaky grin. The younger woman and captain rolled her eyes, but she went ahead and sat in the co-pilots seat.
